WNC baseball honored for academics

The Western Nevada College baseball team continued to show its ability in the classroom as well as on the field.

For the third straight season, WNC won the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association Spring Academic Team Award. The baseball team has won the award in all three years of its existence.

The baseball team maintained a 3.1 grade point average during this past spring semester. It also marked the sixth straight semester in which the baseball team maintained at least a 3.0 G.P.A. The baseball team has never failed to maintain at least a 3.0 G.P.A.

This past spring, catcher Victor Nunez led the way with a perfect 4.0 G.P.A. Others with outstanding G.P.A.s included James Crocket with a 3.94. Kyle Starratt, Josh Moody, Lance Ray, Brett Moravec and Darren Bruhns all finished with G.P.A.s above 3.6.

"I am very proud of these young men's effort," WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said. "What they do in the classroom and on the field puts our college in the best possible light."

Bell featured in USA Today

Carson High graduate Mackena Bell has now received national attention for her racing exploits.

Bell was featured in story that appeared in USA Today. The article appeared on page 3C in the newspaper's Monday edition.

Hours after graduating from Carson High on Saturday, Bell raced in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at All American Speedway in Roseville, Calif. Bell took ninth in the Late Model race, her fourth top-10 finish in six races in the series this season.

Bell also just turned 18 and assumed primary ownership of her own race team, Mackena Bell Motorsports. In addition, Bell was selected as Carson's Prom Queen.

Dyer wins Lake Berryessa event

Kevin Dyer of the Carson Tigersharks took home one of the most prestigious endurance swimming titles at the Lake Berryessa Open Water swim even on Saturday.

Dyer won the 17-18 male division in the one-mile race held near Davis, Calif. Other finishers for the Tigersharks were:

Tatum Boehnke, sixth, 17-18 girls; Jacob Cornwell, 11th, 15-16 boys; Elizabeth Everest, 20th, 11-14 girls; Jamie Showalter, 13th, 15-16 girls.

Virginia City looking for boys, girls hoops coaches

Virginia City High School is again looking for a boys basketball coach. Tim Olson, who has been the boys basketball coach at Owyhee, originally accepted the job along with a math position in April, but has decided to stay where he is.

Virginia City is also looking for a girls basketball coach. Anyone interested in the boys or girls positions should call principal Pat Beckwith, (775) 847-0992.

Rendezvous horseshot tournament set

The 25th annual Carson City Rendezvous Horseshoe Tournament sponsored by Les Schwab Tires and The Horseshoe Club will be held on Saturday, June 14 at Mills Park.

Entry fee for the double elimination tournament is $10. Entries close at 10:30 a.m. Saturday with the the tournament to begin at 11.

Miles, Zunino win state free throw titles

Two Carson City youth won titles in the recently held Knights of Columbus Free Throw State Championships. Rachel Miles won the 11-year-old girls division while Ali Zunino won the 13-year-old girls division. Both represented Knights of Columbus No. 4781.

Sertoma golf tournament is June 22

The Carson Sertoma Club's annual charity golf tournament will be held on Sunday, June 22 at the Eagle Valley East Course.

Shotgun start is at 8:30 a.m. The event is held to raise funds for local children with hearing/speech problems, cancer and diabetes.

There will be closest to the hole, long drive and beat the pro contests, a drawing and team prizes. the $85 entry fee covers golf, cart, barbecue and tee prizes.
