Frank Mullen to talk about Fallon’s ‘Spirit Cave Man’ at Gold Hill Hotel on Sept. 30

Journalist and author Frank X. Mullen will present a program about the 10,600-year-old mummy of Spirit Cave Man found near Fallon.

According to Mullen, those remains and others found elsewhere in the Western Hemisphere could rewrite the history of the human occupation of two continents.

“The finds are caught in crossfire of politics about the identity of the First Americans, but recent DNA testing on bones found near Kennewick, Wash., indicate the ancient ones may be the ancestors of modern Native Americans after all,” Mullen said.

He has done extensive research into Spirit Cave Man and has written about the topic since 1996. Learn about the First Nevadans, who lived in the Great Basin when Nevada was a land of lakes, 6,000 years before the first pyramids rose in Egypt.

The Spirit Cave Man is the oldest human mummy found in North America. It was discovered in 1940 in Spirit Cave, 13 miles east of Fallon, by the husband-and-wife archaeological team of Sydney and Georgia Wheeler.

The program will begin at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 30 at the Gold Hill Hotel. Dinner is 4-8 p.m.
