The Lyon County Commission on Thursday will consider requesting the Nevada Department of Transportation reduce the speed limit between Fortune Drive to Lafond Avenue on U.S. 50 in Dayton.

The item was requested by Commissioner Tammy Hendrix, representing District 3.

The Dayton Regional Citizen Advisory Board met June 7 and discussed forwarding a recommendation to the county commission to reach out to Gov. Joe Lombardo or to NDOT on having the speed limit lowered to 45 mph on the stretch of highway that is currently 60 mph. CAB members voted 3-1, with members Christopher Gonzales, Suzanne Armstrong and Regina Lee in support and member Morgen Brown opposed. The board currently has one seat vacant.

According to the letter submitted by Gonzales, the board had agreed that impacts at lower speeds would reduce severity of injuries and assist until NDOT could provide a permanent solution.

In August 2022, the county commission authorized former County Manager Jeff Page to sign a letter to NDOT supporting the installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of U.S. 50 and Traditions Parkway to address concerns with new development. More than 500 new planned homes for the Traditions infrastructure and 600 existing homes within the Sutro development were expected to generate more traffic along the highway.

In other items, the board will consider a request for a conditional use permit from Lyon County School District project Supervisor Darrell Bluhm to allow a bus yard, commercial coach office building, vehicle maintenance building, bus fueling station and an employee parking area at an existing educational facility on a 60-acre parcel southeast of Spruce Avenue and Topaz Street in Silver Springs.

Lyon County utilities engineer Kishora Panda will provide an update on the Utilities Department.

The board will approve, deny or amend a resolution terminating a declaration of emergency that previously was declared in Resolution 23-15.

The Board of County Commissioners’ next meeting is 9 a.m. Thursday in the Lyon County Administrative Complex, 27 S. Main St. in Yerington.
