Carson booters roll to eighth straight win

RENO - Carson High spotted McQueen an early score, and then scored four straight goals to knock off the Lancers 4-1 Wednesday afternoon.

Carson improved to 8-0 heading into Saturday's home match against second-place Galena at 11 a.m.

"I think we played really well," said first-year coach Eric Masters. "They're a good opponent. They have some guys that can play."

Johnny Lopez, Jon Guevara, Gustavo Gonzalez and Victor Romero all scored a goal.

Trailing 1-0, Carson tied the game in the 26th minute when Chris Espinoza won the ball and played it to Lopez, who took a shot from about 18 yards. The goalie tried to make a diving stop, only to see the ball roll off his hands and into the net.

Carson made it 2-1 right before the half when Romero corralled a loose ball and sent it to Luis Camacho, who fed Guevara for the goal from 12 yards out.

Gonzalez and Romero each scored in the second half.

Marco Magallon made several good saves in the second half, according to Masters, who also singled out Romero for strong play.

• The Carson JV squad rolled to a 7-0 win against McQueen thanks to two goals from Jorge Rodriguez and one each from Francisco Barrios, Adam Shoaf, Milton Rodriguez, Omar Garcia and Danny Limon.

Nathan King and Arnaldo Diaz played well defensively.

Carson is now 7-0-1.

HUG TOPS DOUGLAS

MINDEN - The Douglas boys' soccer team fell to Hug 1-0 Wednesday on a late goal by the Hawks. Hug put the game-winner in on a breakaway with eight minutes to play.

"It was just an unfortunate exchange that led to a breakdown," Douglas coach Milko Vasquez said. "We got the initial stop on it, but the clear went right to their guy and that was it."

Vasquez said his team controlled possession for a good majority of the game and had a number of solid scoring chances.

"We should have had two goals in the first half, but we just couldn't capitalize," Vasquez said. "We need to learn how to take advantage of those situations."

Vasquez said Audrick Anderson, Roy Dornbrook and keeper Francisco Sanchez had good games for the Tigers.

Douglas will host Damonte Ranch at 3 p.m. Friday when the team will celebrate Senior Day early.

TENNIS

DOUGLAS POUNDS CARSON

Pat Johnson went 3-0 and James TenBroeck went 2-0 in singles to lead Douglas High to a 14-4 win over the Senators Tuesday afternoon.

TenBroeck has won 32 straight sets and improved to 12-0 this year. Included in his wins was a victory over previously unbeaten Blake Sly.

Douglas was particularly strong through the first two rounds of doubles play, going 6-0 with its top three teams. Matt Thomas and Matt Williams went 2-0 in doubles as did the teams of Grant Mason and Shane Patton and Craig Stratton and Garon Athanacio.

Adam Whitt went 1-1 in singles while J.J. Aragon and Ben Drozdoff won one doubles match each with the tandems of Chris Fernandez and Cory Gentner, and Michael Lang and Spenser Hollenbeck-Pringle also winning one set apiece.

VOLLEYBALL

YERINGTON SWEEPS FALLON

Makenna Lommori had 10 kills, nine assists and three blocks to lead the Lions past Fallon 23-17, 25-10 and 25-12.

Liz Rogers added 11 assist and two aces, Maddie Hull-Taylor contributed 10 digs and Brooke Aiazzi added six kills. Amber Veil finished with five kills.

Yerington is 23-1 overall and 5-0 in league.

DAYTON SWEEPS SILVER STAGE

The Dust Devils rolled to an easy 25-6, 25-17 and 25-16 win over Silver Stage Wednesday night.

Dayton improved to 20-1 overall and will host Yerington at 6 p.m. Friday.

Madison Foley led Dayton with six kills and four assists. McKenzie Kielty had 16 assists and Cora Jeffreys added 12. Kielty also had three aces and four kills. Rachel Brown had four kills while Cassie Depew had three kills and a block.

The Dayton JV squad won 25-14 and 25-16. Heather Niemi finished with six aces, three kills and four assists. Ashley Hill contributed two aces, one kills and three digs.
