Bills raising Nevada minimum wage to $12 an hour go to Gov. Steve Sisolak

The Nevada Senate approved a pair of measures to raise the minimum wage on Friday. One of the bills, AB456, sponsored by Speaker of the Assembly Jason Frierson, enacts a gradual increase of the minimum wage up to $12 per hour.

Bee Habitat ribbon cutting set in Carson City

Carson High students participate in job shadowing program at Legislature

Nine Carson High students participated in a job-shadowing program during the 80th Nevada legislative session. During the course of the three-week shadowing program, students visited the legislature once a week and had an intimate view of the legislative process. The students selected for the program ranged from seniors to sophomores recommended by teachers and interested in the legislative process and public service. Each class was represented as follows:

Sen. Bernie Sanders says his ideas not viewed as so radical anymore

Sen. Bernie Sanders said Wednesday many of the campaign themes his critics dismissed as too radical when he ran for president in 2016 are now viewed as much more mainstream, including “Medicare for all.” The Vermont Democrat told a crowd of more than 500 at an outdoor rally in downtown Reno that many said he was living in a “dream world” when he campaigned four years ago for a minimum wage of $15 per hour.

The Department of Transportation is beginning to repave and enhance Interstate 580 through Carson City. Gov. Steve Sisolak on Wednesday signed AB431, which automatically restores voting rights to thousands of ex-felons who are released from prison and have been discharged form parole or probation. He said the bill will affect some 77,000 Nevadans who will immediately get their right to vote back because the bill is retroactive.

Carson City Sheriff’s Office: Slot World’s open door policy doesn’t include cars

The following people were booked into the Carson City Jail. All are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. TUESDAY At 2:40 a.m., Perla Garcia, 45, was arrested after Slot World officials called to report a woman backed her car into one of the casino’s doors then left the scene. The vehicle was stopped a few blocks away. She was arrested on suspicion of felony destruction of property, DUI alcohol 1st offense, hit and run, no driver’s license and violating bail conditions. Bail was set at $9,600.

Weather cited as Nevada casino gaming win drops

Total gaming win ticked down 1.8 percent in April to $936.5 million, a decrease of $17.3 million compared to April last year. Gaming Control Board Analyst Mike Lawton said there have been declines in each of the first four months of this calendar year.

FRIDAY • At 1:44 p.m., a 51-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of DUI drugs 1st after a traffic stop for failure to maintain a lane at Silver Sage and Sonoma. She was also arrested on suspicion of a due care violation. Bail was set at $1,140.

Kevin Durant won’t return in time for Game 1 of NBA Finals

OAKLAND, Calif. — Kevin Durant won’t be ready to play in time for Game 1 of the NBA Finals on May 30. The two-time reigning finals MVP has yet to return to on-court work while recovering from a strained right calf. Big man DeMarcus Cousins might be healthy for Golden State’s series opener against either Milwaukee or Toronto.

Bill removing ‘archaic’ restrictions on abortions passes Assembly

The Assembly on Tuesday approved legislation removing what supporters described as archaic restrictions on abortions in Nevada. The bill, SB179, sponsored by Democratic state Sen. Yvanna Cancela would repeal a requirement that physicians document a pregnant woman’s marital status. It would also remove a criminal penalty for anyone who causes an abortion without the advice of a physician.

The following people were booked into the Carson City Jail. All are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. FRIDAY At 3:49 a.m., Robert Stine, 37, was arrested on drug charges after a traffic stop for failure to signal and an improper lane change at Carson and Long streets. A search of the vehicle found a red eyeglass case containing meth and a pipe. Stine was charged with possession as well as the traffic violations. Bail was set at $3,630.

Nevada lawmakers direct Public Works to get a better handle on construction inflation

A joint subcommittee Monday directed Public Works to get a better handle on construction inflation and separate that from change orders and other things that are raising the price of state buildings well above their original budgets. The agency will have to report those costs quarterly to the Interim Finance Committee.

The Board of Supervisors held a special meeting on Monday to approve Carson City’s fiscal year 2020 budget. The supervisors voted to approve the city’s $176 million final budget, which consists of a projected $92.7 million in revenue for the general fund, $172.4 million in revenue from other funds, and roughly $4 million rolled over from 2019.

Magazine ranks Nevada sixth-best for business

Nevada is ranked No. 6 in the nation by Chief Executive Magazine in its recently announced Best and Worst States for Business in 2019. Nevada moved up from its ranking of No. 12 in 2018. A total of 57 bills died Friday as the third passage deadline passed. That number is far fewer than the 274 measures that failed to make it out of committee April 12 in the house where they were introduced but far more than the 17 that failed to win first house passage April 23.

TUESDAY • At 10:40 a.m., an 18-year-old Carson High student was arrested on the school campus after a disturbance in which he threatened the dean of students and several others including deputies. He was arrested on suspicion of creating a disturbance threatening school staff and resisting deputies. Bail was set at $550.

Meet the Queens: Fallon Portuguese Festa this weekend

The annual Portuguese Festa takes place this weekend at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall. Carson High wind, blues jazz ensembles win big at Music in the Park Festival

The Carson High School Wind Ensemble and Midnight Blues Jazz Ensemble performed in Southern California, taking home numerous awards at last weekend’s Music in the Parks Festival. The festival took place at the Performing Arts Center of Baldwin Park and ended with an awards ceremony at the Universal Studios CityWalk in Universal City, Calif. On May 6 at about 12:15 p.m., a suspect entered the Bank of America in Carson City and attempted to cash a fraudulent check. The suspect utilized a false identification card. The suspect fled the scene prior to law enforcement arrival.

Bill updating school funding formula introduced at Nevada Legislature

Man held for DUI with 3 kids in vehicle, Sheriff’s Office says

The following people were booked into the Carson City Jail. All are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. FRIDAY • At 12:17 a.m., James Brown, 31, was arrested after deputies stopped him at Carson and Adams streets. Dispatch reported he had two outstanding contempt of court warrants. A search after his arrest revealed a meth pipe and small amount of meth. After he was transported to the jail, another meth pipe was found on the floor of the patrol vehicle. Brown was arrested on suspicion of possession of meth and paraphernalia as well as attempting to conceal evidence as well as the two warrants. Bail was set at $3,227.

Mile High Jazz Band presents Big Band Jazz Tuesday

The Mile High Jazz Band will perform an all-instrumental program highlighting the talents of several soloists from the band at Living the Good Life Bistro, 1480 N. Gas prices drop slightly in Nevada

Nevada gas prices have fallen 0.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.50 per gallon Monday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 1,130 stations. Gas prices in Nevada are 21.4 cents per gallon higher than a month ago, yet stand 20.3 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.

LAS VEGAS — Nevada’s U.S. senators and Energy Secretary Rick Perry toured a site north of Las Vegas where the federal government is storing weapons-grade plutonium secretly shipped from South Carolina last year. Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen were closed to the media and public. National Nuclear Security Administration head Lisa Gordon-Hagerty also made the trip.

Martin Truex Jr. won his second Monster Energy NASCAR Cup race of the season at the Monster Mile on Monday, after rain forced the postponement of Sunday’s race. Despite the Toyota victory, it was a good day for Chevrolet, with Alex Bowman taking his second runner-up finish in a row and Kyle Larson third. Kevin Harvick was the first Ford, coming home fourth.

Section 199A provides up to a 20 percent special deduction of profits for having a business, an ownership in a partnership or S corporation (including a rental operation in most cases). Nevada joins lawsuit against generic drug manufacturers

Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford and 43 other attorneys general filed a lawsuit against Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc. and 19 other generic drug manufacturers. The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut, alleges that the pharmaceutical companies entered into numerous illegal conspiracies in order to unreasonably restrain trade, artificially inflate and manipulate prices and reduce competition in the U.S. for more than 100 generic drugs. The complaint also names 15 individual defendants that served key executive roles and devised, implemented and orchestrated the alleged schemes on a day-to-day basis.

Making school districts whole costs Nevada $8.2 million

The Senate Finance Committee on Friday approved a bill to make up the shortfall in the Distributive School Account that pays for K-12 education across Nevada. The shortfall occurred over the past two-year budget cycle because of unanticipated increases in enrollment above and beyond what was budgeted by the 2017 Legislature. Under state law, the state is required to make up any shortfall experienced by the 17 school districts.

Sleeping driver held for DUI, Carson City Sheriff’s Office says

The following people were booked into the Carson City Jail. All are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. THURSDAY • At 3:07 a.m., a 41-year-old busboy was arrested after deputies were called to an address on Imperial Way for a report of a domestic battery. He was arrested on suspicion of domestic battery 1st, violating pre-trial conditions and interfering with a victim attempting to report a crime for taking her phone away. Bail was set at $11,000.

Nevada Economic Forum adds $42.8 million to what lawmakers can spend this session

The Economic Forum added just $42.8 million to the total General Fund revenue lawmakers and the governor can spend this session. Of that, $31.4 million is in revised projections for the remaining months of Fiscal Year 2019 that ends June 30. The added 2019 funding can be used for one-shot and supplemental expenditures this year or carried forward into Fiscal Year 2020 and used there.

Memorial Run heading toward Carson City

The Peace Officers Memorial Run is traveling up Highway 395 this morning in Douglas County. The annual relay started in Las Vegas last week. Each of the 134 legs of the relay represents the name of a fallen officer.
